GOV SCHWARZENEGGER PROCLAIMS FEB 6 AS RONALD REAGAN DAY
February 6, 2008, Sacramento, CA
A special message from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to California Republicans, remembering and celebrating the life of President Ronald Reagan on his birthday today:
"Few political figures had as profound an influence on me as Ronald Reagan. I became a U.S. citizen during his presidency, and he was the first president I voted for as a citizen. Reagan inspired me and made me even prouder to be an American.
"He also made me so proud to be a Republican, standing up for smaller government, lower taxes, and more personal freedom and responsibility. Reagan was able to express so plainly and forcefully the core ideals of our party, and with his quick wit, charm, and unwavering optimism, he inspired not only Republicans, but Democrats and independents as well. His leadership affected not just America, but the rest of the world, and because of President Reagan the world is safer, more free and more prosperous.
"We are of course saddened that he's gone, but take comfort knowing that his spirit remains with us in all of its vigor and charm. He once said, "In this springtime of hope, some lights seem eternal. America's is." As we celebrate the ninety-seventh anniversary of his birth on February 6th, 2008, which I am proclaiming 'Ronald Reagan Day' in California, let us all be thankful that Ronald Reagan's light, too, shines eternal."
