UNDERSTANDING GOP NOMINATION PROCESS - HOW TO BE A DELEGATE

California's Presidential Primary - Feb 5th
California Republicans will choose their delegates to the national convention with an estimated 23 other states on Tuesday, February 5th. For the first time, delegates will be chosen by congressional district, rather than statewide, giving each candidate an opportunity to compete in parts of California even if they are not in first place statewide. The new system is expected to draw even more attention from presidential candidates as they compete for the single largest cache of convention delegates.

Without a doubt, California is seeing a high level of interest from presidential candidates, and not just for fundraising. Under this new system, every candidate now has a reason to come to California and compete for delegates to the national convention.

Governor Schwarzenegger deserves great credit for his leadership, along with our legislators, for moving the state's presidential primary forward from June to February and its effect on raising California's profile in the nomination process.

CA State Party Role
The state Republican committee will not endorse any candidate in the primary, but instead will focus on supporting the eventual Republican nominee, including candidates for other federal, state, and local offices.

How Delegates To National Republican Convention Are Selected:
Under state law, Presidential candidates must designate their potential delegates and alternates 30 days in advance of the primary election. Their designees will be the official delegates from their Congressional District if the candidate wins a plurality of the votes cast in the February 5th primary in that respective district. Each candidate will choose three potential delegates and three potential alternate delegates.

If You Would Like To De A Delegate
Republicans interested in serving as a delegate or alternate should contact the campaign of the Presidential candidate of their choosing.
