STATE BUDGET BATTLE: REPUBLICANS FIGHT FOR FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY, DEMOCRATS DIVIDED
Republicans in Sacramento continue to work hard for a balanced and fisically responsible state budget.
The Contra Costa Times today provided a detailed report on the real division in Sacramento: between top Democrats in the legislature, specifically the Senate President and Assembly Speaker.
"The gamesmanship -- which fits into the long tradition of spats between Democratic leaders -- can be traced back to last year, though it was largely muted as Perata and Nunez worked with Schwarzenegger on an agenda of mutual interest that included a landmark bill to curb greenhouse gases, a record $40.1 billion in infrastructure bonds and a minimum wage increase," notes the Times.
Meanwhile, Republicans in the capitol have used several tools implement the same principle of fiscal responsibility, manifesting itself in the presently delayed state budget. Assembly Republican leadership ensured tax cuts were included in the budget, while Senate Republicans are working to build in further spending reductions.
The other team's leaders continue to fight with one another, sniping over tribal gaming compacts, efforts to loosen term limits, and other non-issues such as whose consultant gets work on what project. You can read the Times article here.
By contrast, as Chairman, I've worked with Assembly Republican leader Mike Villines and Senate Republican leader Dick Ackerman for some time now, and both are outstanding leaders who share a common commitment to putting common sense Republican ideas into action - something sorely needed in the legislature.
We can be proud of the legislators and Governor we've sent to Sacramento, and the skill with they continue to apply to the current battle over the budget and other key issues in this legislative session.
Thanks for your leadership,
Ron Nehring
