CAN THEY HEAR YOU NOW? GUIDE TO BEING HEARD IN DC

Are you a Republican frustrated by the belief that your views are not being heard in Washington?  And, that your so-called representatives don’t actually represent you?  Unfortunately, in Santa Clara County, our U.S. Senators and Congressman are Democrats.  But, while we work together to change that, there are still many ways that every citizen can have their voices heard and influence legislation in the Capitol.

This issue of Insight is devoted to the best tips and techniques for contacting legislators and influencing policy decisions.  In addition to contacting your own representatives, you can also contact the leadership and members of key committees that drive the direction of legislation.  Take a look at our Guide to Being Heard.  It’s a valuable directory to the key players in Congress and issues-oriented non-governmental organizations that will guide you to having an impact.

Wondering if a phone call or fax to a Senator or Congressman really makes a difference?  Consider this:  Our own Senator Dianne Feinstein was recently quoted in the Washington Times saying that the over 8,000 calls her office has received blasting her on her support for the current immigration bill wasn’t really enough – it would take 30,000 calls to effectively demonstrate the will of the people.  This sounds like a challenge, doesn’t it?  If you have a well-developed, politely stated opinion on the immigration bill, or any other issue, I encourage you to call DiFi or her partner, Senator Boxer.  Yes, elected officials do pay attention when voters mobilize.

Writing a letter to the editor of the San Jose Mercury News or the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as calls to talk radio also get the attention of elected officials.  They have staffers that monitor local media to get the pulse of citizens.

You can and should have your voice heard and SVGOP is your partner in letting our elected officials know what’s on you mind.  Take some action today!

Sincerely,
Keen Butcher, Chairman, Santa Clara County Republican Party
